Educating Peers About Type 1 Diabetes: Sam's Experience

Sam, a third grader at Samuel Mickle School, took the opportunity to teach his classmates about Type 1 Diabetes, offering a first-hand look at his daily life and how he manages the condition. Sam introduced his insulin pump and Dexcom, explaining how these devices help him monitor and manage his blood glucose levels.

Sam, who loves playing soccer, highlighted the importance of keeping his blood sugar levels within a healthy range to perform at his best during games. He demonstrated that with the right care and attention, he can continue to enjoy his favorite activities, just like his classmates.
As a fun learning activity, Sam handed out goodie bags filled with sugar and showed how, with the proper amount of insulin, he can still enjoy treats and live a normal, active life.

Afterward, Sam answered all the students’ questions with enthusiasm, offering insightful and clear explanations about his experience with insulin-dependent diabetes.
